We’ve already half stuck our neck out and predicted Arsenal will be there or thereabouts this season. After their opening day performance – and indeed that of their rivals – its tempting to go balls out on them. Of course it’s far too early to draw conclusions, but 6/1 won’t be around much longer…

The rumour mill is beginning to get into the swing now we’re nearing the summer transfer window and yet again Gareth Barry is being linked with a move to Liverpool, with Xabi Alonso emerging as a target for probable Real Madrid president Florentino Perez. It would seem as if Benitez will have to let Alonso go to fund a move for Barry… but is it a worthwhile swap?

He has now signed a deal until 2014, which is a strong commitment to the club against the background of boardroom turmoil. Football is amazing – but it does have its flaws. Two of them were highlighted in last night’s Merseyside derby, where Everton snatched a 1-1 draw and denied Liverpool the chance to go top.
An absorbing, high tempo game ended honours even this afternoon, Arsenal and Liverpool battling out a one all draw at the Emirates. Despite the lack of clear cut chances, it was a fascinating, absorbing game, and there were two high quality goals first from Robin Van Persie, and then from the under-pressure Robbie Keane.
