The Road to World Cup 2010

Unfortunately not a new incarnation of arguably the greatest PC football sim – FIFA RTWC ’98 – but a look at the situation after last night’s games. There are now no qualifying matches until June, so a long time to stew on a good week (England, Northern Ireland, Republic of Ireland) a bad one (Wales) or a mediocre one (Scotland)…

Playalikes: Number 4: Shay Given and Jussi Jaaskelainen

Lookalikes are ten-a-penny – anyone can make Dirk Kuyt look like Sloth from the Goonies, or Peter Reid look like a monkey. It takes more to put two people together stylistically and functionally; players who remind you of one another, players with similar styles – players that could be clones of one another. Number four in our series: Shay Given and Jussi Jaaskelainen.

A Season with Verona

I have just finished this book, and though I am coming horribly late to the party (it was first published in March 2002) I want to shout about it to any other football fans it has passed by. The book tells of the author Tim Parks’ travels with Hellas Verona throughout the 2000/01 season, and their triumphs, trials, and tribulations. Footballsup Moments of Genius – those rare but beautiful occasions when someone produces something breathtaking, something out of this world, unattainable by mere mortals. Fernando Torres produced one yesterday in the Merseyside derby, controlling and then backheel-volleying a perfect through ball for Steven Gerrard to drill past Tim Howard. Still recovering from injury and off [...]

The Footballing Lexicon: Number 2: DIMINUTIVE

Throughout football writing, journalism and commentary, you hear the occasional, but recurring, adjective/phrase that seems ‘out of place’. Words that have no place in the vocabulary of your average football fan. Yet, they only ever seem to crop up in reference to football. We’re not talking about ‘dominant’ or ’slide rule pass’ here – but [...]
