Can Anyone Stop United?

Man Utd went five points clear at the top of the Premiership with a 3-0 win over Fulham last night, with goals from Paul Scholes, Dimitar Berbatov and the returning Wayne Rooney.

It was not just their victory, but the manner of it, that would have scared their challengers (and the rest of the Premiership). Fulham were beaten before the game had even begun – they had little or no attacking intent, and United’s clean sheet record was never under threat. The home side were mechanical, inexorable, ruthlessly yet aesthetically attractively efficient. Paul Scholes ran the game from midfield, Berbatov could have had a hat-trick, Rooney scored with his first touch Vidic and Ferdinand were as imperious as ever – only Ronaldo, again, was anything less than mightily impressive.

The only glimmer of home for the other 19 teams is an implosion upon having their backline penetrated – remember Arsenal’s invincibles stuttering after losing their record. But it doesn’t look likely.
