Champions League Fallout

English sides showed their vulnerability last night, as Chelsea lost 3-1 in Rome and Liverpool only nicked a 1-1 home draw with Atletico Madrid via a dodgy penalty decision – see Gerrard crumpling to the ground here.

Inter Milan and Barcelona were both held to draws, 3-3 and 1-1 respectively; the latter ending Barcelona’s 11 match winning streak in all competitions.

Chelsea’s result was a particular shock; they’ve been excellent recently, but to fold so abjectly must be a concern for Scolari. Deco’s sending off will not have helped, either.

Interestingly Scolari has hardly rotated his side at all this season… and with injuries to Essien, Ballack, Carvalho, Ashley Cole and previously Drogba, could the glut of games be taking their toll?

Chelsea have looked so magnificently efficient and ruthless; could this be a terminal dent to their confidence? They bounced back brilliantly after defeat to Liverpool; with this have the same galvanising effect?

They are away to Blackburn on Sunday (13.30) – that will tell us what we need to know.
