This blog is guilty of repeatedly laughing at Tottenham. Although in mitigation, they have been hilarious this season – the only reason more jokes haven’t appeared here is that they are available everywhere else.
But we must now quickly acknowledge the appointment of ‘Arry Redknapp. Will he save them from relegation? Yes. And that must be their priority. Spurs have correctly realised they are seriously in trouble, this is not the time to experiment, that they need someone with a proven track record in English football.
‘Arry will get them out of trouble, will potentially make them a top 5 side again.
But is he really the man to take them to the next level? The man to break to stranglehold the Big 4 have? The man to outmanouvere Rafa, Big Phil, Sir Alex, Arsene Wenger? Surely not.
He seems at best an interim appointment, someone who can stabilise and rescue, ready for the next Ramos to come in and take them above and beyond 5th place. Does ‘Arry see it that way? Will the board back him with £40m in the close season (providing he does manage to keep them in the Premiership)? Only time will tell.
One point to be made here – the shambolic treatment of Martin Jol was justified by the assurance that Ramos was an amazing manager, was the man who would take Tottenham to the next level, the level they craved, the Champions League. They staked their reputation on it. And he didn’t – he was a spectacular failure, and barely lasted a year.
Should they not fall on their swords? I applaud their decision/action to remove Ramos before the situation became terminal, but should they still be in a position to make such decisions?
This must be their last chance.
