Laughing at Spurs… still….

And so it continues. Spurs lost 2-1 to Stoke on Sunday, confirming that what began as a loss of form and a bad run has now become a fully blown crisis. Teams sometimes play poorly for a period, or suffer some bad luck, or have unwelcome injuries, and results go against them. Sometimes it takes new players a while to gel. Spurs, however, are in a different level of trouble. They were an absolute shambles yesterday; two red cards, two penalties conceded (had both been converted thre scoreline would have been worse) a goalkeeper intent on maiming his own defenders, and an astonishing lack of cohesion and confidence.

The defenders looked shakey. Woodgate, previously a cultured rock (if such a thing exists) looked wobbly and uncertain. Bale was sent off after a horrendous error. Corluka looked out of place at centre back against a physical striker, and Dawson, who replaced him, was also sent off.

Lennon is a shadow of the player we thought could be the next big thing a couple of years back. He has not kicked on at all. Modric, although undeniably talented, has struggled massively in the over-physical Premiership and looks a lost lamb. He may find his feet – he may not. Bentley – God knows what has happened to him. He was one of the division’s most potent attacking threats last season – now he is one dimensional and unimaginative, with poor delivery.

Jenas has always been average and overated but now has no-one to carry him. Zokora has arguably been their best player this season, which tells it own story.

Upfront, Bent is not top quality – a useful back up or stand in yes, and he has scored a few goals for a struggling team, but he will not carry a front line. Which he needs to, as Pavyluchenko is miles off the pace after playing nearly a whole season in Russia. Giovanni Dos Santos must wonder why he swapped 20 minutes here and there for Barcelona, top of the league in sunny Spain, for 20 minutes here and there for Tottenham, bottom of the league in cold, wet (and downright scummy) Tottenham.

Ramos – will he stay? Will he go? You have to fancy he is on his last legs. Bolton next, before games against Manchester United and Arsenal. It is conceivable – nay likely- Spurs will still not have a win on the board after those three games. And you wouldn’t bet on him still having a job then.

Looking at the quality of Spurs’ players, it is impossible to see them going down. But looking at the quality of their performances, its impossible to see them staying up…
